CO2 EMISSIONS FOR THE AVIATION SECTOR UNDER THE EU EMISSIONS TRADING SCHEME.
The European Union has decided to include the Aviation Sector in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. This means that every ton of CO2 emitted from flights arriving at and departing from airports within the European Community (over 2,700 aircraft operators are concerned), has to be third party verified and covered by an EU Allowance. If the effective verified emissions exceed their allocated amount of free allowances, aircraft operators will have to buy allowances at market prices – EUR 10.00 to 13.00 per ton of CO2 in the first quarter of 2009.
