UK ETS

The UK Emission Trading Scheme was the first voluntary sector wide all-gas GHG emission trading scheme. It runs for five years from 2002 to the end of 2006.
The objectives of the UK ETS were to develop expertise and promote learning-by-doing amongst UK Industry and to deliver emission reductions for the nation as a whole. The scheme has had its critics but it has also resulted in the fact that UK Industry being considerably better placed to cope with the EU ETS than most competitors.

SGS United Kingdom Limited is accredited to provide baseline and annual verification for Energy and Process emissions from Direct Participants and Model 1, 2 and 3 trading for CCA Participants. SGS verified baseline emissions for 5 out of 34 Direct Participants (DP) and now provides annual verification to 7 out of the remaining DPs. SGS has also verified over-achievements for approximately 300 Agreement Participants.

SGS United Kingdom Limited has been one of the winners from the UK ETS. As a result of the scheme, SGS applied for and gained accreditation from UKAS, learning a considerable amount about GHG emission verification in the process. As a result, SGS now has a very solid base of experience from which to offer other GHG verification services. The accredited procedures for the UK ETS has formed the basis of all our other procedural systems applied to CDM, EU ETS and CCAR.

SGS continues to offer annual verification services to both Direct Participants and Agreement Participants.
