Voluntary Activities and Other Schemes

SGS CCP has been following the progress of the voluntary carbon market for some time and we believe that there is an emerging need for independent monitoring, verification and certification for greenhouse gas reports and carbon footprint assertions within several voluntary reporting initiatives.

We have developed a service that is designed to provide a greater confidence for voluntary reporting GHG assertions, by being an impartial third party with uniform evaluation methodologies.

SGS validates and verifies emissions reductions from voluntary projects that are scientifically credible but fail to meet compliance criteria for CDM or JI projects - usually for political reasons. For example, the host country has not ratified the Kyoto Protocol or the project started before 2000. Many, but not all of these projects are in the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry sector (LULUCF). The projects must be additional to business as usual activities, account for leakage, minimise negative environmental and social impacts and have infrastructure and resources that will demonstrate that emissions have been avoided.

Besides project based emission reductions, SGS also verifies voluntary corporate GHG inventories that can be used for public or internal reporting, cost management and demonstrating to shareholders and regulators that senior management is aware of the potential impact of a carbon constrained economy on future business. As such businesses have been prompted to take the opportunity to act now, rather than await new legislation necessitating mandatory GHG accounting and reporting.

Our team of professionals are keen to work with clients to meet their GHG reporting needs and requirements under the ISO14064 part 1 and 2, VCS 2007, World Resource  Institute GHG Corporate Accounting and other greenhouse gas protocols.

Having your emission reductions and GHG assertions verified and backed by the SGS brand name holds indisputable benefits and increases the credibility of your project.
